Vipassana Meditation
Vipassana meditation is the development of insight. Insight is the penetrating understanding of our mental and physical experience through the cultivation of mindfulness. Mindfulness is the active observation of each moment free of judgement that leads to a clear awareness of choices normally concealed by our reactive tendencies. Our sense of responsibility is enhanced and the possibility that we can help ourselves with our problems.
Mindfulness can transform confusion and painful emotions into a quiet calmness of mind and is the Buddha's direct path to liberating wisdom.
Introduction and Day Long
29 February 2008 (Friday)
7 to 8.30pm
1 March 2008 (Saturday)
1 to 6pm - with a tea break The evening talk and the following day of meditation and teaching introduces the practice of mindfulness and its benefits in balancing the often time-pressured and goal driven stresses of day to day living. You will find it helpful to learn to be mindful if you worry, can’t think clearly, sleep badly, feel tense, irritable, fatigued, sad, anxious, impatient or overwhelmed. Of course we all have these experiences and we normally consider them to be obstacles or problems, yet they are where we practice mindfulness in order to develop understanding and insight into what it means to be happy.
Classes are on a dana basis.
Dana
For 2500 years the teachings of the Buddha have been supported by the practice of dana. Just as meditation is the practice of cultivating wisdom and understanding, dana is the practice of developing generosity. In this tradition of Vipassana meditation the teachings to meditators are given freely. In return the students support through dana the livelihood of the teachers.
Dana as a practice is not separate from meditation practice but is a foundation for it. Dana is one of the beautiful states of mind. It directly functions to open up and free the mind from its typically narrow perspective of self-interest. When we practise generosity mindfully not only do we express our gratitude joyously, we also intentionally develop awareness, understanding and non-attachment.
Western meditation teachers usually do not have access to the same cultural support for dana that exists in traditional Buddhist communities. At the same time they have both the respect for the practice of dana, as well as the need to support themselves. An understanding of the interdependent relationship between teachers and students and the centres where meditation is taught is vitally important for the teachings of the Buddha to flourish in both Buddhist and non- Buddhist countries.
No amount can be prescribed as dana to a teacher - your gift will help enable priceless teachings to continue that have survived for 2500 years.
